Mexico is remaining behind in technological innovation: low patent registration.

Mexico faces a concerning phenomenon about patent registration, registering only 981 patents in Mexico in 2022, reflecting a low innovation level in the country compared to how other countries that have driven the industrial revolution and the technological transition at globally. This low number haven’t been seen since 2010, which represents a 12-year setback in terms of technological progress. In contrast, the year 2018 it reached a total of 1,555 registered patents, the highest record in Mexico.

Patent registration is a key indicator of the innovation’s levels, and its low number raises serious concerns about Mexico’s competitivity. Jesús Carrillo, member of the Mexican Institute for the Competitivity (IMCO), warns about the need of an innovation process to keep the competitivity in the country, not just in terms of technology and artificial intelligence, but also in the transition to sustainable energies and materials.

“We are not innovating, there’s no more investigation and development and without those they’re basic components for the existence of new capabilities, not just technological, but also think in the personal capabilities that it implies.”

The outlook is concerning, since the innovation lack limits the ability of Mexico to integrate high specialty industries, like the production of microprocessors or the energetic transition that developed countries are already doing and currently are the base of the technology.

On the other hand, in September 2022, Mexico was invited by United States to participate in a multimillion investment package focused in the production of semiconductors production, highlighting the importance of promoting the technology innovation in the country.

Innovation lack not only has economic repercussions, but also affects competitiveness, productivity and wages. It’s fundamental that Mexico takes measures to boost innovation, promote training and to generate a proper environment for the technological development and innovating talent.
